A Texas day care is making headlines after they apparently posted a sign telling parents to get off of their cellphones and pay more attention to the kids they’re picking up.
Inside Edition reports that a picture of the sign was posted on Facebook last week by Houston-area parent Juliana Farris Mazurkewicz, captioned, “Posted at the day care today.”
The post, which has gotten over a million shares as of Friday, read, “You are picking up your child! GET OFF YOUR PHONE!!!! Your child is happy to see you! Are you happy to see your child?? We have seen children trying to hand their parents their work they completed and the parent is on the phone. We have heard a child say, ‘Mommy, mommy, mommy…’ and the parent is paying more attention to their phone than their own child. It is appalling. Get off your phone!!”
Mazurkewicz said she didn’t see a problem with the note.
“I thought it was on point,” Mazurkewicz told Inside Edition. “I wasn’t offended, and I thought it was a good reminder — to myself and others — of what’s important. We all get caught up in our social media and etc., none of us are immune.”
Mazurkewicz added that she hasn’t seen any parents on the phone since.
Mazurkewicz’s post garned thousands of likes and comments, many from parents who agreed whole-heartedly with the sign’s message. There were also some comments from parents who said the sign offended them. They argued that their day doesn’t stop when they leave the office, and that they get stuck on work-related calls during day care pickup.
