At my checkup today, the OB/GYN said my baby and I look great! I’m excited to meet him (or her) in six months! I admit, though, that I’m already nervous about labor. I worry that I won’t know it’s happening. My doctor reassured me with these signs you’re going into labor soon.
Cramps and back pain increase
Muscles and joints stretch and shift as you get closer to childbirth. Expect more aches and pains because of these shifts.
Diarrhea starts
As your uterine muscles relax, your bowels get loose. Stay hydrated if you experience this early sign of labor.
The nesting urge hits
For some reason, most moms experience an intense need to organize, clean and nest before their babies are born.
The baby drops
In the weeks before labor, your baby descends into your pelvis as it prepares for the birthing process. You’ll breathe easier and waddle and pee more after this shift.
Your cervix dilates
At your third-trimester exams, the doctor will check for cervical thinning. Expect to be 10 cm dilated before your baby is born.
Vaginal discharge changes
A mucus plug protects your baby from infection. When it breaks as labor gets close, you may notice thicker, pinkish discharge.
Contractions become more noticeable
Braxton-Hicks contraction can start months before your actual labor, but they and real contraction become more frequent as actual labor approaches.
Blood pressure increases
Your blood pressure may rise in the 24-48 hours before your baby is born. Your doctor will verify that the increase is not because of preeclampsia.
These are a few of the signs that you could be going into labor. Check with your doctor for more details, and let me know if there are any I’ve missed!
