Have you ever tried canning peached with your children? I purchased a bushel of peaches from our local farmers market and took them home to can with my girls. I thought that it would be a great idea to get my girls involved. I have fond memories of canning peaches with my grandmother and mother. The sweet smell of peaches filling the air while my grandmother softly sang in the kitchen. Watching the glistening glass jars filled with peaches, cooling on the counter top, while I sat and visited with my mother and grandmother are some of my favorite memories.
My impromptu decision turned out to be a nightmare. First of all my girls were not excited when I asked them to help me. I begged them and then dragged them into the kitchen. As we carried the Mason Jars upstairs my girls were fighting and knocked several jars onto the tile floor where they crashed into a shattered mess.
By 4:00 in the afternoon, every inch of my kitchen was a sticky mess and I was fed up with being the referee between my two girls. There was no singing and I doubted that my daughters would have a memory worth remembering. My mother and grandmother had made it seem so fun and easy. I’m afraid my girls will just remember it being a sticky hectic mess. They will most likely buy their canned peaches at Wal Mart.
