10 calming toys and gadgets to soothe a crying baby

You’re a pro at showering your baby with affection and hugs, but sometimes even that doesn’t soothe their crying. Curious babies often need the colorful and noisy stimulation of rattles, mobiles and night lights to keep their attention and help them forget their (thankfully few!) problems.

Pediatric occupational therapist Keri Wilmot, creator of toy-reviewing site ToyQueen.com, says choosing toys little ones are naturally drawn to is vital when learning how to soothe a crying baby. “Watch and determine whether your baby likes music, environmental sounds, lights, touch, gliding or bouncing,” she says. Along with the trial and error technique, be sure to check the toy manufacturer’s recommended age guidelines when choosing toys for your baby.

Here are ten baby-calming toys and gadgets that will help little ones self-soothe while you take a moment to gather your thoughts:

1. Baby rattles

Much more than a shaker on a stick, modern baby rattles come in various styles and textures to enhance a baby’s sensory skills. Author and leading play expert Stevanne Auerbach, who also holds a doctorate in child development, suggests parents look for rattles that offer soothing sounds, such as lullabies. “Babies find them not only fun to listen to and to watch, but also great to chew on when teething,” Auerbach says.

Noise-making rattles can be nearly any shape and may be made of wood, plastic or plush toys.

2. Reflective mirror toys

Who’s that cutie smiling? Babies love looking at her reflection in the mirror.

Auerbach explains how to soothe a crying baby with their reflection: “Look for a crib mirror, which is perfect for observation, interaction and focus,” she says. “It will attract your baby’s interest, and she’ll enjoy looking and talking to her image.”

3. Colorful mobiles

Many parents choose colorful mobiles for their baby’s nursery, but these toys are more than a pretty decoration. Auerbach reveals, “While a colorful mobile is good for visual stimulation, it can also provide focus and quiet observation.”

Mobiles can play nature sounds or peaceful lullabies. Lay baby on their back under the mobile, so the soothing sights and sounds can lull them to sleep.

4. Crib projectors

A crib projector can set a soothing scene. After snuggling into their crib, babies can gaze at relaxing lights and starry skies. Some play soothing sounds, such as rain or a calming sea. Most have timers so babies can fall asleep under the stars.

5. Bath toys

Bath toys will turn baby’s frown upside down. For younger babies, Auerbach recommends a soft terry-cloth puppet for washing and soothing. Bubble machines are another calming choice. Some play relaxing instrumental sounds that will have babies humming a happy tune.

6. Plush toys

If everything you hand your baby ends up in her mouth, a pacifier may keep her calm between feedings. Use one with a plush toy attached so she’ll have something cuddly to hold while keeping her mind off a rumbling tummy. According to Wilmot, these types of pacifiers can be positioned under baby carrier straps, making it easier for babies to find the pacifier if it falls out. They’re larger than traditional pacifiers, so they’re also easier for you to find in the diaper bag.

7. Soothing musical toys and sound machines

If baby is singing the blues, the delightful tunes of a sound machine may help. They resemble small radios, but Wilmot recommends ones that are plush toys that babies can snuggle with at night. She recommends sleep toys that include soft lights, sounds, environmental noises and music.

8. Baby swings

A soothing baby swing can quickly turn a grumpy goose into a happy camper. Many swings include lights, vibrations or a bar with plush toys. Some baby swings can be attached to a digital music player for extra song selections.

9. Vibrating baby toys

There are lots of cuddly soothers on the market to help comfort babies at home or on the move. Choose one made with soft, cozy fabric that emits gentle music and vibrations.

10. Vibrating mattress pads

A vibrating mattress pad can calm a fussy baby and put them to sleep. Most are slipped under the crib mattress so baby can feel the gentle vibrations on their back. Some have timers that gradually shut off so the little “sleeping beauty” won’t be startled when it stops.
