Utica Community Schools Early Childhood Programs

Nursery & Preschool
Three and four year old children are welcomed into inviting classrooms by experienced, caring teachers. The classroom environment provides learning opportunities throughout the day. Children interact with each other and teachers during free choice, small and large group activities. Literacy and math skills are introduced and practiced in all activity areas including art, music, housekeeping, story time and block play. Teachers use the Creative Curriculum and Michigan Department of Education Standards to guide their observations, assessments and planning.

Montessori Preschool & Kindergarten
Maria Montessori s timeless philosophy guides children s learning in a nurturing environment. Children learn by manipulating materials, which develop meaningful practical skills and academic knowledge. Creativity, respect, reasonable behavior, self-discipline, and self-motivation are encouraged. Classes are multi-age. It is important to note that participation in this program does not guarantee future placement at Messmore Elementary School.

Full Day Preschool
Full Day Preschool is available (ages three to five years old) at three locations in the school district. Teachers plan activities and prepare an environment designed to gradually prepare young children for the more formal school years ahead. Our Full Day Preschool staff works closely with parents and their child to establish and maintain cooperative relationships. Prior to enrollment, visits are required in order to help the staffs and families get to know each other. While children attend, ongoing communication with parents continues. Teachers are qualified according to the State of Michigan standards. The Creative Curriculum is followed at all locations.

Great Start Readiness Program
The GSRP is Michigan s state-funded preschool program for children with factors which may place them at risk of educational failure. The program is administered by the Michigan Department of Education, Office of Great Start. Research on preschool programs and specific research on GSRP indicates that children provided with a high-quality preschool experience show significant positive developmental differences when compared to children from the same backgrounds who did not attend a high-quality preschool program.

Parent & Toddler Classes
Come Play With Me is a parent and toddler program that meets once a week. The class offers opportunities for child and parent to learn and grow together.
