Regard Preschool

Regard Preschool is located in the Willow Glen neighborhood of San Jose, CA. Regard was founded in 1991 by a former elementary school teacher, who was a young mother looking for the best preschool for her young son. "What I found out there were preschools that were either too rigid and academic or they were simply play based without any structure at all. Regard is all about creating a balance between play and building skills for success in school and life."

Our program is designed to be safe and comfortable and enriching for all of the children in our care. We love working with mixed age groups; it gives the children a chance to learn from each other, either as a novice or a mentor. To see the children grow in our program from young two year olds to very competent and poised pre-kinders is rewarding and exciting.

Along with academic preparation, daily exploration and fun, character development is very important to us. We want children to be well socialized and learn to be a good friend to others and a respected member of their peer community. Treating others the way you like to be treated, "The Golden Rule", is often referred to; it just makes good sense.

There is lots of praise, encouragement and recognition for children when they make good choices, be it collaborating with a friend to create a masterpiece with blocks, or helping a younger child turn the water on at the drinking fountain, or someone who has worked hard in the pre-kinder class to write a perfect letter, or just the simplest gesture as arriving to school and greeting their friends with a warm good morning and smile. We are most proud of the kindness and support the children show each other.

Folks often ask, "how do you handle discipline?" Well, the first step is to maintain an interesting and well paced program. Along with a well balanced program, our staff works to develop and maintain a personal connection with each child. When children know you care about them, they are so much more willing to cooperate. Layer this personal connection with lots of positive reinforcement and praise and you have a recipe for success! Do we ever use time-outs? Yes, we use time-outs sparingly. Time-outs used effectively can help children learn to manage their own behavior.
