My name is Dorothea and I started Peppergrove Children's Center 33 years ago when my daughter was 8 months old. Before we began our family I was working for SDUSD Children Centers as a Preschool Teacher.
Peppergrove is a developmentally based Preschool Program with hands-on learning activities. Science, Art and Music are an integral part of the curriculum. Curriculum is set-up in two week units and has one broad subject such as 'how plants grow', 'bugs and butterflies'... along with the basics---letters, numbers, shapes.
Language is a critical component as well. As an emergent reader it is the Preschoolers doorway to not only strong reading skills and mastering math but also their ability to problem solve.
The Preschool is separate from the rest of the house. The classroom consist of the Rug Room which has the science table and floor activities such as blocks, cars, manipulative... It is also were we do Group Time and Music. The Art Room is for table activities such as drawing, puzzles, games, art projects... This is also where we eat and it has the bathroom. The last room is Dramatic Play for dress-up and housekeeping. It also has a funky piano that the children may use 'to make music'.
Academics are important but a positive self image is essential and directly related to school success. It is the most important thing a child needs in order to reach their full potential. It is my objective to offer a challenging classroom setting which promotes both learning and a positive self-image.
I am very proud of this program. We offer a safe, nurturing, learning environment. Because we are small, we can prepare each child for kindergarten while embracing their unique talents and strength.
