Outside The Lines

Outside the Lines is a play-based, outdoor-focused family child care in Serra Mesa. Our goal is provide excellent care to children while still being affordable and supportive to parents.

We offer a home-cooked breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snack. Meals are served family style, and the children choose what to eat and how much. This gives them power over their own bodies and builds their autonomy. The shared meals also create a community of adventurous eaters. Children are more likely to try and enjoy a new food if they see their friends eating it. We also provide sustainable diapers and are delighted to help with potty learning. Transitioning out of diapers is an empowering experience, and we have helped many children achieve diaper independence!

Spending time outside is hugely beneficial to children. It improves their physical health by making them stronger and protecting them from getting sick, and it also improves their emotional health. They become less stressed and more self-confident, and are able to focus for longer periods of time. The program is built around our outdoor classroom, but we also have a large, naturally lit art studio inside where children have access to a wide variety of creative materials. The children are free to choose between indoor and outdoor play.

Every child deserves to feel unconditionally loved, valued, and respected. We take the time to really see their play and process so they know they are important. To make their work visible, we share daily stories and pictures with parents. This also helps to connect parents back to their child's day while they are separated.
