Our Village's unique early childcare experience provides the structure of a center-based learning experience with the intimacy of a family child care home environment. Our Village's childcare provider earned her Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education and Development, while a degree is not a requirement for FCCH providers and many center-based daycare workers carry an Associates Degree, at best. Each child has an Individualized Developmental Portfolio, which serves as a snapshot of their development, and a keepsake for life, once they graduate from the program. There are weekly lesson plans that include the interests of each child, as well as their individual developmental needs. Developmental screenings are conducted every 6 months. The mixed-age group reinforces lessons and new skills learned and encourage teamwork, collaboration and higher self esteem among peers. Traditional early childhood and Montessori philosophies implemented with a small teacher to child ratio promote age-appropriate independence, fun educational experiences, and a sense of belongingness to a community. Older children 's learning opportunities are geared toward kindergarten readiness and upon graduation they are familiar with and/or have mastered such skills as (but not limited to) reading/spelling their own name, phonetics, positively identifying and counting to 30 objects, problem-solving (both individually and with peers), sorting objects by color, size and shape, recognizing some site words, independently un/dressing & feeding self, and toilet training.
