About the business
Next Steps Tutoring is a family business. My wife, Lori D., and I started the company in the summer of 2014. Lori has been tutoring students in Seattle for ten years. When Susan K. of Basic Skills Tutoring retired, Lori and I started Next Steps Tutoring to fill the needs of those clients. Lori teaches math through calculus, chemistry, physics, language arts, in addition to executive function coaching.
My background is in public education. I am a Washington State certified teacher, and I earned my Master's in Teaching from the University of Washington. After grad school, I worked in high-need schools in the Renton and Highline Districts. I spent three years working at Highline Big Picture School, an alternative school that presents academic learning through real-world internships. During this work, one-third of my students had learning disabilities including ADHD, Dyslexia, Asperger's Syndrome, and Non-Verbal Learning Disability. At Next Steps Tutoring, I teach history, economics, language arts, and middle school math. I also do executive function coaching, writing instruction for students with dyslexia, and help graduating seniors craft effective personal statements. Last year, I supported students who earned admission to Babson, Chapman, Carleton, Haverford, Oregon, Tufts, USC, UW, Whitman, Whitworth, and the Pacifica Graduate Institute.
Lori and I built a team of tutors who are highly capable. Miles S. studied Neuroscience at Oberlin College and is our STEM specialist. Miles teaches physics, biology, chemistry, and math through calculus. Dandi majored in Math and English at UW while tutoring at the Odegaard Library writing center, and has a very gentle touch with students experiencing anxiety or depression. She teaches math through pre-calculus, and language arts.
