About the business
As a tutor, I offer a safe environment with limited distraction which allows students to open up, where I have the opportunity to observe their strengths and weaknesses. Based on the individual needs of the student, I create a plan to engage with them in a way that speaks to them. With my help, students will improve their knowledge and build greater self-esteem to become more active learners.
Drawing from over 15 years experience as a homeschool mom/teacher, 3-5th grade private school classroom teacher, visual and performing artist, teaching artist, coach, and mentor, I integrate creative instructional techniques with individualized tutoring that is tailored to your child's needs.
If your child is having difficulty with reading, spelling, and writing, they would benefit tremendously from instruction using the Orton-Gillingham approach which is intended primarily for use with persons who have Dyslexia. In the hands of a well-trained and experienced instructor, it is a powerful tool of exceptional breadth, depth, and flexibility. I have extensive training in Multisensory Structured Language Lesson Planning and Teaching Strategies for Struggling Readers from The Key Learning Center. I am also a Reading Coach with Read to Succeed Asheville which uses the OG Approach to teach low-literacy students in Asheville City Schools to read.
If an assessment is needed to assist parents, teachers, and tutors in providing effective learning plans, I use online diagnostic tests that do not compare your child with others as in benchmark tests. Instead, they define your child's strengths and weaknesses.
I teach students utilizing the three learning modalities, or pathways, through which people learn visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Whenever possible, I infuse instruction with art, music, interactive activities, movement, and collaboration to develop academic strengths, boost self-confidence, sharpen communication skills, and HAVE FUN!
