About the business
Blue Monkey is a learning workshop with literacy and math instruction designed to engage elementary students with meaningful learning experiences.
Workshops are developed for elementary age students, grades 2-5 (ages 7-12 years). Classes are organized by content and differentiated by individual needs of students. Workshops will be split into two small group sections (four to six students) by grade level combinations: grades 2/3 and 4/5. Each class is seventy-five minutes twice a week and may vary from four to eight weeks in length depending on curriculum.
How is this program suited for my child's needs?
My workshop program is designed to integrate creative and "out of the box" teaching strategies to make learning fun and meaningful. Instruction will help students master fundamental skills necessary to confidently tackle novel problems. In today's public school system, teachers are required to adhere to academic plans, district adopted textbooks and increased pacing demands. With pressure to perform on standardized tests, teachers do not have the flexibility to fairly distribute critical support to all students. Research shows that students are not meeting the necessary benchmarks for reading and "schools are consistently losing ground relative to grade level expectations" (Florida Center for Reading Research).
The goal of the workshop is to fill the gap and offer students additional support that will elevate classroom performance, transfer to testing situations, and most importantly, develop critical life skills. The small group structure encourages peers to collaborate and demonstrate mastery of concepts. The workshop format enables a flexible curriculum and repeated exposure to key learning strategies that build with time. Although academic objectives stay the same, no course will be identical as it will change and grow with the students.I am a passionate teacher who cares about a child's basic right to discover their true purpose for learning. I have seven years of experience teaching the spectrum of elementary grades since 2007. I have taught in classrooms across the nation, from California to Colorado and Florida. I earned a Master of Arts in Education at Pepperdine University, California and hold a B.A. in Psychology with a minor in Spanish. Since my first job as a young YMCA camp counselor, I have enjoyed being inspired by the inquiring mind of a child.
