About the business
We are primarily a show kennel (please read our history below) that can also accommodate 4-6 guests at a time. All our guests are treated like our show dogs. Each dog has a private indoor pen connected to its own outdoor run. The only time you will see more than one dog in a pen is if they are owned by the same family that prefers they be kept together.
The runs are 1/2 covered and inside is kept at a steady 75 degrees heated or air conditioned as needed. The dogs go out 6-8 times a day depending upon the weather and the last outing is usually between Midnight and 1 AM so it is not such a long wait until morning.
We prefer to feed twice a day unless once a day is preferred but everyone gets bedtime cookies. After lights out, we keep two baby monitors in the kennel...one to the bedroom and the other to the TV room.
If a dog is deaf, blind, diabetic...we rarely have a problem with special needs. Medication per instructions. Proof of inoculations.
We welcome our prospective customers to make an appointment to visit and see what we are all about. An appointment is always necessary as this is our home.
Beltara got it's start in 1950. Mrs. Sacks was a highly-respected AKC breeder/judge. Ms. Laventhall focused on professional dog show handling. For 35 years we were successful breeding and showing Doberman Pinschers. In 1969 we imported the third Pharaoh Hound to the US and quickly established Beltara as the "Foundation Kennel" for the breed in this country. Mrs. Sacks was instrumental in establishing the Pharaoh Hound Club of America and set up and maintained the breed registry until it was turned over to the AKC upon official breed recognition into the Hound Group in 1984. For over 20 years Mrs. Sacks has written the Pharaoh Hound Column for the American Kennel Club Gazette.
Ms Laventhall maintained the official PHCA Stud Book until she was able to turn it over to the AKC to be incorporated into their records for the Pharaoh Hound.
Ms Laventhall continues to show dogs, but now only those produced by Beltara. Her latest project was to increase the legacy of one of their great foundation dogs, (PHCA CH) Twinley King Sesostris. He is now credited with having sired 45 AKC champion Pharaoh Hounds, a record for the breed. Six of the Pharaoh Hounds currently at Beltara are champions. Both Mrs. Sacks and Ms. Laventhall have received the AKC "Breeder of Merit" designation.
