The ALA was started by a retired mom who was concerned about the quality of after school care available to children today, and decided to do something about it in her neighborhood. It was started in September 2007, and the ALA serves children ages kindergarten through sixth grade. The program tutors in math, reading, writing, and homework help. They also give classes in life skills such as cooking, gardening, and music.
